Democrats Prevail in Springfield Recount Lawsuit The lawsuit over Springfield's 2012 election has ended with Democratic candidate Margaret Bandrowski for Township Committee holding her seat by a three-vote margin. Power Outages in Springfield Reported After Severe Weather On Thursday, Jan. 31, Jersey Central Power & Light reported that 892 Springfield customers lost power. In a message on their site, the power company attributes the loss of power "to severe weather that passed through our service territory." Senator Kean Teams with AAA to Urge Motorists to Prepare for Winter New Jersey State Senator Tom Kean visited AAA on Route 22 in Springfield to remind motorists to make sure they are prepared for winter driving. Springfield Man Convicted of Murdering Orange Teen An Essex County jury convicted Springfield resident Keevin David, 20, of murdering 18-year-old Tyrell Coleman of Orange in January, 2011. Assistant Prosecutor Portia Downing, who tried the case, said David shot Coleman while Coleman was walking home from high school. The motive for the shooting was not clear. David faces 30 years to life. Van Catches Fire on Route 22 A van burst into flames on route 22 in Union near the Springfield border shortly after 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25. No one was hurt in the single car accident. An officer for the Union fire department said the driver reported that the late model white Nissan caught fire for no apparent reason. The driver was not injured in the …

Research Firm Presents Results of BID Survey On Monday, Jan. 14, Springfield business owners and residents packed the Fire Department Headquarters to hear the JGSC Group's Mark Lohbauer present the results of their marketing survey. JGSC created a snapshot of Springfield’s shopping districts and the spending characteristics. With that data, the group drew conclusions and made recommendations about the challenges and opportunities facing Springfield business. Grand Opening of Delightful Cake Kreation The new Morris Ave. dessert shop celebrated its recent opening with an official ribbon cutting this weekend. Bergen Sworn into Freeholder Board On Sunday, Jan. 6, Bruce Bergen was sworn into the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders. Bergen, a Springfield resident and a partner in the Cranford law firm of Krevsky, Silber & Bergen, has practiced law in Union County for 32 years and has been active in leadership and elected positions with the Union County Democratic Committee since 1979. Bergen was Springfield's township attorney for 17 of the past 19 years. St. James Student Spreads Holiday Cheer to Shelter Animals Madison Wright, a 5th grader at St. James the Apostle School, didn't want anybody to miss out on the holiday spirit, four legs or two, so she organized a pet products collection in her class. In the spirit of giving, her classmates …

Reorganization Brings New Leadership for Springfield On Jan. 1, Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi swore in newly elected officials to Springfield's Township Committee. Democrats David Barnett and Margaret Bandrowski were sworn onto the Committee, joining veteran Democratic Committee members Dave Amlen and Rich Huber who became Springfield's new Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively.  Springfield Posts New Recycling Collection Rules  After voting for a new service provider and refuse collection schedule late last year, Springfield implemented a new recycling collection schedule at the beginning of 2013. Springfield Officials Decide on 2013 Garbage and Recycling Collection Schedule After debate from members of the public and officials, the Springfield township committee voted to have weekly garbage and recycling pickups. Residents were split on the proposal to reduce garbage pickup from a twice weekly to a weekly schedule. While some thought the change would be a painless way to encourage more recycling, others worried that less frequent garbage collection would cause smells and attract rodents, particularly in warmer months. Springfield Parents, School Officials and Police Debate Student Safety In response to last week’s school shooting in Newtown, CT, Springfield school and safety officials spoke with parents at length about safety procedures at Springfield Schools at the Springfield Schools Board of Education meeting. Chief of Police John Cook joined school officials in a presentation on safety precautions. During the presentation and the question and answer session that followed, parents questioned if the safety measures in place were enough. Town Hall Menorah Poll Results While a majority of Springfield residents inSpringfield Patch's informal poll said they favored having a Menorah outside of the municipal building as part of the the township's holiday celebration, a significant minority oppose the idea. Of the 87 votes in the poll, 63 respondents favored having a Menorah dispay and 24 opposed.  Springfield Holiday Tree Lighting 2012 This year's holiday celebration attracted record crowds. People flocked to the family friendly attractions, which included a petting zoo, a horse-drawn wagon and a visit from Santa himself.  Sandy Post Mortem Springfield Patch continued its department by department look at how the township handled the storm and is planning for future emergencies…

Official Election Results Put Bandrowski Over Fernandez by Five Votes After weeks of uncertainty, the Springfield Municipal election had an official count this week. The final tally shows victories for the two Democrats in the race for the two open seats on the township committee, David Barnett and Margaret Bandrowski, with Bandrowski besting Deputy Mayor Jerry Fernandez by four votes. After the election, Springfield Democrats have a four to one majority. The only remaining Republican on the committee is current Mayor Ziad Shehady. Charter Commission Study Question Passes According to the official count from the 2012 Springfield municipal election, the Charter Commission question has passed by 170 votes. The five-member commission is …

Police: Two Men Arrested for Stealing Cooking Oil Springfield police reported that two Newark men were arrested after attempting to steal waste cooking oil from the West 22 Diner. On Oct. 1, Officer Michael Wlazlo arrested Daniel Avilez and Omar Juarez at the West 22 Diner on Route 22 after they were allegedy observed attempting to steal the contents of a waste cooking oil container. Police said the men used a van outfited with a tank and pump to siphon oil from tanks. Both were charged with theft and have a municipal court appearance date. Multiple Drivers Land in Hospital Following Route 78 Accident Emergency workers from Springfield, Summit and Berkeley Heights responded to a multi-auto accident on Interstate 78 on Oct. 8. The accident …
