Springfield Week in Review

A look back at the notable goings on in the township in recent days.

In a development years in the making, Springfield broke ground on the turf field athletic complex outside of Dayton High School this week. Officials, students and residents gathered on Friday, Sept. 7 to ceremonially mark the start of construction on the field.  This November, Springfield residents can decide if they feel the township needs a new form of government. The election ballot will include a question asking whether Springfield should assemble a five members to study Springfield’s form of government and make recommendations on the government’s future.  The Springfield Fire Department welcomed three new members to its ranks this month, Kevin Ruck, Peter Peros and Christopher Tutela-Res. The new hires bring the Fire department’s …

A look back at the notable goings on in Springfield.

Troy Village Apartment houses were without power and a car was crushed a domino-like series of events on Tuesday, August 7. A tree landed on a nearby power line, which subsequently pulled down a utility poll, which in turn crashed into a parked car. No one was hurt in the incident. Jersey Central Power & Light crews were called to the scene to repair the poll. Springfield Auxiliary police officers stationed at the accident site said the tree fell down on its own and ascribed the break to rot. Neighbors questioned the rot as a cause, noting that the full-grown tree had been uprooted and the recent stormy weather. A look back at the notable goings on in the township in recent days.

The Springfield Farmers market opened for business on Monday, July 2, with returning businesses as well as new vendors. The market will be open every week on Mondays from noon to 6 p.m in July and August at the Dayton parking lot. The market moves to Ruby Park when school reopens in September. In addition to farmers' market staples like fruit and vegetables, Springfield residents can pick up barbecue and other specialty food and food items.  In a formal ceremony, Springfield firefighters David Maas and Michael Mastroeni were sworn in as Captains at the Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, June 26 Township Committee meeting. Both veteran firefighters were joined by their families in the ceremony. Dayton sent a new crop of graduates out into the world. Patch and Patch readers were on hand for pictures and video. For a look at where the grads are heading in the fall, click here. Just two months after their installation, Springfield's red light cameras have lost their ability to enforce traffic violations. On Tuesday, June 19, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced it was suspended ticketing from red-light cameras in 21 of 25 municipalities it approved to use the technology, including Springfield. Springfield native Sean P. Eadie was among 10 Army Reserve Officer Training Corps comissionees joining the ranks of the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant at the recent commissioning ceremony at Seton Hall University…

Springfield sold and sweet treatery the Ice Hut partnered with the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to raise money to fight childhood cancer after reading a story on Alexandra “Alex” Scott.  Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since then, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of volunteers across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. A look back at notable goings on in the township in recent days.

On Tuesday, May 15, Zakiyyah Shakoor, 37, of Wilboro was found to have over $50,000 worth of heroin hidden in her car during a routine traffic stop on route 22. Shakoor reportedly broke into tears after officers asked for her license and other motor vehicle papers. Police reportedly found a pound and a half of heroin crammed inside a fast food restaurant paper bag in the car. The Springfield Township Committee are considering making dramatic changes to the township’s board of health. Under the proposed changes, the health committee would be composed of the township committee members and two residents. A dump truck carrying landfill en route to Pennsylvania overturned late in the morning on a ramp off of Rte. 24 near the intersection of I-78 on Friday, May 11. The driver sustained minor injuries in the accident. He was taken to the hospital by the Springfield First Aid Squad. Springfield Deputy Fire Chief Carlo Palumbo said that the truck rolled over when its load shifted as the truck took a turn on the ramp.  Palumbo said that it was likely that the momentum forced the landfill material to one side of the vehicle, causing the truck to tip over.  On Sunday, April 29, the Dayton Softball team ran their second annual softball clinic fundraiser for the Girl’s Recreation Softball league in Springfield.   60 girls attending the clinic, which …

Trailing by two and three outs away from elimination in the Union County Tournament underdog Dayton did what they do best: fight. The Bulldogs put across seven runs in the top of the seventh on their way to a 7-2 upset victory over Governor Livingston in the quarterfinals of the Union County Tournament. In a classic pitchers duel, Dayton pitcher Tommy Losito pounded the strike zone in an impressive display of command and outlasted the Governor Livingston team to pick up the win in a gritty complete game win. At the most recent Township Committee meeting, Springfield Environmental Committee Chair Denise DeVone honored the winners of her group's annual design contest. A look back at the stories that shaped the township.

Shortly after midnight on Monday, March 19, an armed man robbed the BP gas station on Morris Ave. near the Union border. Springfield police say the man pointed a black semi-automatic pistol at an attendant shortly after the attendant finished gassing up a car. The gunman demanded that the attendant hand over all the money he had on him and then led him at gunpoint to the station’s convenience store area. The robber demanded that the employee working behind the counter give him the money from the register. In addition to the cash, the suspect also reportedly stole lottery tickets and several cigars before fleeing from the store on foot. He was last seen running south on Meisel.
