Official Election Results Put Bandrowski Over Fernandez by Five Votes

Both Democrats in race win seats.

According to the official count of Springfield's ballots by Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi, Margaret Bandrowski has edged ahead of incumbent Jerry Fernandez by five votes.  The final tally shows victories for the two Democrats in the race for the two open seats on the township committee, David Barnett and Margaret Bandrowski. The two incumbent Republicans, Marc Krauss and Jerry Fernandez, fell short of the votes needed to attain second terms.  With Barnett and Bandrowski on the Committee, Springfield Democrats have a four to one majority. The only remaining Republican on the committee is current Mayor Ziad Shehady.  The race was close and drawn out due to voting complications caused by tropical storm Sandy. Former Mayor Fraenkel Running for Committee As Independent Democrat

The race marks something of a return to the fold for Fraenkel. Elected as a Democrat, Fraenkel grew estranged from the township’s party over appointments to the Springfield boards. In his last political race, he ran as an independent in a race with two Democrats.  “It’s very clear that in Springfield, an independent candidate can only be a spoiler,” Fraenkel said. “Too many people vote straight down the party line.” With the election coinciding with the presidential election, Democrats are likely to be …

Springfield Democrats: Turf Field Needs Referendum, Further Study

Township Democrats urge caution with proposed bonding ordinance for turf field.

The Springfield Democrats sent out a mass email to Springfield residents concerning the turf field bond ordinance up for discussion at the Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 14. The letter is below. ------------------------------------------------- A bond ordinance in excess of $3.2 million will be introduced at the Springfield Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, beginning at 7:00 pm.  The purpose of borrowing this money is to fund an artificial Turf Field in front of JDHS. Although we may all agree that the kids deserve a field, there are issues that need to be clarified before moving ahead with funding.  Of primary concern is the safety of the athletes and residents using the field.  Documented health issues …
