The Springfield First Aid Squad will be holding a Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, May 19 from 8 am to 12 noon. The breakfast will be held at the squad building, located at 10 North Trivett Avenue, across from the municipal building. In addition to the traditional pancakes, waffles will also be offered, along with toppings for the breakfast treats and good coffee. Donation for the breakfast is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Veteran volunteer public safety workers take on new leadership roles.
Springfield's First Aid Squad welcomed five new crew chiefs to its roster at the Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The five new crew chiefs, Stu Maslow, Richard Raymond, Shira Raymond, Jeremey Salow and Shane Ronan, are all veteran members of the squad with years of experience responding to emergencies and saving lives. Before they sworn in, First Aid Squad Captain Apu Mullick explained that crew chiefs are essentially shift supervisors and extolled the qualifications of each new chief. With them in place, the First Aid Squad has a total of 18 crew chiefs. The 1 AM crash on Route 78 left Viola Jefferson of Roselle Park in critical condition.
An early-morning crash on Route 78 near the Springfield/Summit border has left a motorcyclist in critical condition. The incident occured around 1 AM near mile marker 47.2 on Route 78, said Sgt. Brian Polite, a spokesman for the New Jersey State Police. A blue BMW driven by Kam Li, 22, of Bedminster was traveling westbound alongside a black Suzuki motorcycle driven by Viola Jefferson, 32, of Roselle Park. "The BMW is in the right line, the Suzuki in the center lane, both traveling westbound," said Polite, noting that the information is based off of a preliminary investigation. Local public safety agencies put on a night for families in the middle of Springfield.
On Tuesday, August 7, families flocked to Springfield's Meisel park to celebrate Union County's celebration of National Night Out. Local public safety organizations and Union County employees offered refreshments and activitities. Celebrities onhand included famed crime dog McGruff and reknowned Frank Sinatra impressionist Eric DeLauro. Attendees were able to get up close and personal with bomb disposal robots, S.W.A.T. equipment, emergency vehicles and other public safety tech.

Make your car sparkle and support the squad.
Is your car looking grimy in the summer heat? Are you feeling grateful towards Springfield's volunteer community? You are in luck. The Springfield First Aid Squad holds their annual fundraising car wash this weekend. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, FAS members will be washing cars outside of the squad's headquarters on 10 North Trivett Street. Cars are $10 and vans and SUVs are $15. All proceeds go to the First Aid Squad. In the event of rain, the car wash will be held the following day on July 8.

Award recognizes April lifesaving CPR call.
Springfield Emergency responders were recognized this week for their work in saving a man’s life on April 2. The unidentified Springfield resident had been experiencing chest pains throughout the night and couldn't sleep, so he dialed 911 shortly after 5 a.m. The Springfield firefighters and a Springfield police officer found the patient unresponsive and without a pulse. Members of the Fire Department, Atlantic Medics and the Springfield First Aid Squad responded to the scene and placed A.E.D. Defibrillation pads on his chest to shock the man back to life. The First Aid Squad brought the man to Overlook Hospital in Summit. On the way to the hospital, the patient went into cardiac arrest and the first aid squad resumed C.P.R., including …

Springfield First Aid Squad president Liz Fritzen said that the volunteer EMS crew has had been busy but that the members are up to the challenge. In a time when first aid crews are struggling to maintain membership elsewhere, Fritzen said the Springfield squad is thriving. Its 50-plus members responded to over 1,800 calls in 2011 and they continue to constantly respond to area emergencies. In making the declaration, Springfield Mayor Ziad Shehady encouraged Springfield residents to visit SpringfieldFAS and make a donation.

What do we want? Pancakes! When do we want them? How about Sunday Morning? Strange way to start an article involving the Springfield Volunteer First Aid Squad, I know. But this morning, ancakes will be the emergency call for the day. From 8:30 until 1 p.m., pancakes with all the fixings will be offered to all who come to the First Aid Squad House located at 10 North Trivett Avenue, that’s in front of town hall. If anybody starts choking on their food at Applebee's tonight, there will be a line of trained EMTs ready to give them the Heimlich maneuver. The Springfield First Aid Squad is hosting a fundraiser at the restaurant, located at 965 Jefferson Ave. off of Route 22 East in Union, from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. The Springfield FAS gets 10 percent of the bill as long as you bring in the flyer attached to this article. Fire fighters extracted driver trapped after early morning accident.
An early morning crash on Route 78 between a tractor-trailer and a car sent a driver to the hospital. At 12:41 a.m., Springfield fire fighters responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a driver trapped inside a car. Upon arrival, they found that a car and a tractor-trailer had crashed on 78 west in Springfield, near the split between 78 and 24. Springfield fire fighters reportedly found a driver trapped inside the passenger vehicle. Using rescue tools, fire fighters opened the driver’s side door and extracted the victim from the car.
