The big story in Springfield this week was the reaction to the proposed changes to the township Board of Health. Under the proposed changes, the board, currently composed of seven volunteers appointed by the Township Committee, would be replaced by a board of health made up of Township Committee members and two residents with public health backgrounds. The issue took up the lion's share of Mayor Ziad Shehady's Message from the Mayor, where he argued that the board's autonomy was not an inherent virture. He said that having the Township Committee absorb the board's functions would streamline processes and create efficiencies. In his first year as Dayton’s softball coach, Chuck Bell has led his girls to a historic, conference winning season. That success has been remarkable considering that before the season began, Bell was hospitalized after suffering a potentially fatal brain aneurysm. But despite the ongoing effects of the medical emergency, the coach is looking to the future. Two Springfield men were among 13 individuals charged in connection with afederal investigation into illegal online gambling. According to U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman, the operation involved one member of the Genovese organized crime family and 12 members and associates of the Genovese-connected LaScala Crew. On Tuesday, May 15, Zakiyyah Shakoor, 37, of Wilboro was found to have over $50,000 worth of heroin hidden in her car during a routine traffic stop on route 22. Shakoor reportedly broke into tears after officers asked for her license and other motor vehicle papers. Police reportedly found a pound and a half of heroin crammed inside a fast food restaurant paper bag in the car. The Springfield Township Committee are considering making dramatic changes to the township’s board of health. Under the proposed changes, the health committee would be composed of the township committee members and two residents. A dump truck carrying landfill en route to Pennsylvania overturned late in the morning on a ramp off of Rte. 24 near the intersection of I-78 on Friday, May 11. The driver sustained minor injuries in the accident. He was taken to the hospital by the Springfield First Aid Squad. Springfield Deputy Fire Chief Carlo Palumbo said that the truck rolled over when its load shifted as the truck took a turn on the ramp. Palumbo said that it was likely that the momentum forced the landfill material to one side of the vehicle, causing the truck to tip over. On Sunday, April 29, the Dayton Softball team ran their second annual softball clinic fundraiser for the Girl’s Recreation Softball league in Springfield. 60 girls attending the clinic, which …
