Town Hall Menorah Poll Results While a majority of Springfield residents inSpringfield Patch's informal poll said they favored having a Menorah outside of the municipal building as part of the the township's holiday celebration, a significant minority oppose the idea. Of the 87 votes in the poll, 63 respondents favored having a Menorah dispay and 24 opposed.  Springfield Holiday Tree Lighting 2012 This year's holiday celebration attracted record crowds. Official Election Results Put Bandrowski Over Fernandez by Five Votes After weeks of uncertainty, the Springfield Municipal election had an official count this week. The final tally shows victories for the two Democrats in the race for the two open seats on the township committee, David Barnett and Margaret Bandrowski, with Bandrowski besting Deputy Mayor Jerry Fernandez by four votes. After the election, Springfield Democrats have a four to one majority. The only remaining Republican on the committee is current Mayor Ziad Shehady. Charter Commission Study Question Passes According to the official count from the 2012 Springfield municipal election, the Charter Commission question has passed by 170 votes. The five-member commission is …

Missing Clayton Girl Found Strangled, State of Emergency Declared Top State News

Springfield Week in Review

A look back at the notable goings on in the township in recent days.

The most recent Springfield Township Committee meeting coincided with the eleventh anniversary of September 11. Springfield officials marked the anniversary by starting the Committee meeting with a prayer and a remembrance. First Presbyterian Church Minister Victoria Ney read a non denominational prayer asking God for healing and peace, saying "Give us peace, your Shalom."  Following the prayer, officials spoke on the significance of the day. I've watched the TC meetings on cable and I am not impressed. The 'mayor' only gets to chair a meeting, not issue orders to the public or other TC members. Before we moved away the first time back around 1993, I was at TC meetings to ask about the town's affordable housing plan. Five candidates have filed with Springfield's Clerk's office to run for the two contested seats on the Township Committee. All but one of the candidates vying for a three year term on the five-member board are current or former members of the Committee. Republicans Jerry Fernandez and Marc Krauss, incumbents both, are running as part of the Regular Organization Republican of Union County. David Barnett and Margaret Bandrowski are running as part of the Regular Democratic Organization of Union County. Bart Fraenkel is running as a Democratic Choice ticket.
