Little Details Salon Offers Special Cuts for Special Needs Kids

For children with special needs and their parents, something that sounds as simple as getting a haircut typically isn't. 

Springfield's Little Details salon owner Albert Gargiulo knows that the devil is often in the details for children on the autism spectrum. New environments, loud noises, and crowds can be overwhelming and upsetting, making the experience stressful for everyone. Recognizing the importance of accommodating the growing special needs community, Gargiulo opened his South Springfield Avenue salon, an offshoot of Details Salon and Spa, 14 months ago. 

Open seven days a week, clients can make an appointment for a private, off-hours haircut or take advantage of the salon's private room. 

Springfield mom Maureen Sinclair said she was relieved when she saw an advertisement for Little Details that mentioned the salon caters to children like her 4-year-old daughter Shannon. On the autism spectrum, Shannon had never had a haircut, her mom explained, but they decided to give the salon a try on Tuesday. 

"She tends to get a little out of control in crowded places with a lot of noise," said Sinclair, who scheduled a private appointment. "But this is perfect. She and her twin sister will be coming here for the rest of their lives." 

Gargiulo has been committed to helping children for many years, he said. The father of four has collected funds to support Trinitas Regional Medical Center's pediatric and teen psychiatric department. He added that he has reached out to Autism Speaks to let the advocacy organization know that his salon is striving to provide a stress-free alternative to the traditional haircut. 

Gargiulo said Little Details offers the same level of service as his other salon and said he hopes families will consider coming in together for haircuts.
