The Ice Hut Closes its Doors Friday

Will you miss the thatched umbrellas on Mountain Avenue?

Family-owned frozen treat shop The Ice Hut will serve its last customers Friday.

A posting on the Mountain Avenue shop's Facebook wall thanked Springfielders for their support during the store's two-and-a-half year run.

"It is with a heavy heart that we post this update. As of November 1, 2013 The Ice Hut will close its doors. It has been our pleasure meeting all of you know and serving the great town of Springfield. More importantly, we Thank You, our loyal customers, for your unwavering and continued support over the past 2 1/2 years. From our family to yours, we wish each of you nothing but the best. A special thank you to all of our awesome employees, many of whom have been with us since we first opened our doors. We never would have made it this far without you."

The post generated more than 30 comments, as Ice Hut fans expressed their sadness at hearing the news.

More than just a dessert destination, Ice Hut owners Pam and Matthew Klein, Springfield Township residents, used their business to support the community and the charitable efforts of their neighbors.

For the past two years, the shop has donated all the supplies needed for Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a national foundation that raises money and awareness for childhood cancers by hosting local sales, organized and run by parents and students of Walton School. During the summer, the store held 'Autism Sings: A Night of Song' in which students performed to raise funds and awareness for Autism Speaks. In September, the Kleins donated ices to help Florence M. Gaudineer Middle Schooler Evan Berkowitz raise money to to benefit Concerned Friends of Cystic Fibrosis.

According to the Ice Hut's Facebook page, the business and/or all equipment, furniture and fixtures are available for sale. Anyone interested is asked to contact theicehut1@gmail.com.

The Kleins were not immediately available for comment.
