Springfield Celebrates Hanukkah With Public Menorah Lighting

Rabbi pleased with turnout for first-time event.

Springfielders celebrated Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, with a public menorah lighting Sunday afternoon at the Jewish Learning Center.

The community-wide event was led by Rabbi Mendy Blesofsky, director of the JLC, who thanked all in attendance, including members of Springfield's police and fire departments, Township Committee and Mayor David Amlen.

Before blessing and lighting the menorah, Blesofsky encouraged guests to keep the miracle of Hanukkah alive today by performing "mitzvahs" or good deeds for others.

Following the lighting, latkes, donuts, chocolate coins and beverages were served, much to the delight of children who had an opportunity to sing "The Dreidel Song" with their peers.

Many attendees thanked and commended Blesofsky for organizing the event. The rabbi said he was very happy with the turnout and added, "God willing, this is the first" of many annual celebrations. Blesofsky said he is looking forward to Jewish Family Fun Day, which will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 25 at the Chisholm Community Center. The event will include challah making, crafts, a bounce house and Jewish Movie Time. A donation of $5 per child is suggested.
