Owner Scares Off Would-Be Car Thief

Car owner pursued the potential car thief but returned to Springfield and contacted police.

The owner of a 2013 Audi A6 saw a man attempting to open the passenger door of his locked car Monday night outside his Fadem Road place of business but was able to scare off the would-be burglar by yelling at him, according to police.

The man who was attempting to gain access to the Audi then ran off and entered the passenger side of a newer-model, white Mercedes which was waiting nearby.

The Mercedes then sped off onto Route 22 East. The owner of the Audi initially pursued the car but gave up the chase after the driver of the Mercedes turned off the car's headlights and began weaving through traffic. The Audi owner returned to Springfield and called the police who issued an alert to all police agencies with the description of the Mercedes as they believe is "more than likely" that the intent was the theft of the 2013 Audi.

There was no damage to the Audi's passenger side door, according to police.
