Little Artists at Work

Children at the Early Childhood Program at Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael are learning Art History.  Each week, Ms Julie (the program’s director and art teacher) teaches children about the role of the artist and how to observe the artist’s work. The children learn the fundamentals of art – color, lines, shapes and textures. Children’s vocabularies expand by learning words associated with art. Art is an important part of early childhood education. It helps children expand their imaginations and exercise their creativity. It helps develop fine motor skills as well as eye-hand coordination. The children will learn about sculpture, photography, pencil drawings and good old finger painting. We begin each class by reading a story by the artist, learning about the artist themselves and by looking at artwork by the artist.  We started by learning about primary colors and about the artists who use them to create their masterpieces.  So far the children have learned the art of Eric Carle, Ellen Stoll Walsh and Piet Mondrian.
