Elite Fitness Celebrates Grand Opening

Sports and personal training facility opened Thursday at the corner of Caldwell Place and Morris Avenue.

Springfield resident Stephen Ondish couldn't be happier about opening his business, Elite Fitness, in his hometown.

The certified strength and conditioning specialist, who has lived in the Township for close to two decades, decided to move his sports and personal training facility from Millburn to the corner Morris Avenue and Caldwell Place in Springfield and hosted a grand opening celebration Thursday evening.

Elite Fitness offers one-on-one sports and personal training for ages "7 to 87 and everything in between," Ondish said. Clients come in for an evaluation and a certified trainer will set up a program tailored to their needs and abilities. The fitness center also caters to children with learning disabilities who may need to strengthen their coordination or gross motor skills.

Ondish also looks forward to establishing group fitness sessions for young athletes wishing to increase their speed and agility. Being within walking distance of Jonathan Dayton High School makes it a win-win for students and the fitness studio, he said.

"This is a great building, with a lot of history, and great exposure," said the business owner, who added that he's been receiving many calls from people who pass by and are interested in learning more. "It's great to be right next door to a bagel shop, sushi restaurant, a pizza place; there's a feeling of community here."

Mike Scalera, chairman of the Springfield Business Improvement District, said he's thrilled to see the storefront, vacant for at least eight years, put to good use.

In addition to strength and personal training, Elite Fitness also has a second room filled with stationary bikes, treadmills and other equipment for those looking to get in a cardiovascular workout as well.

"This way you don't have to join another gym and you don't need to buy anything else for your home," Ondish said. "Clients can come in seven days a week and use those machines if they like."

The trainer said sessions are held in 30-, 45- and 60-minute increments. Elite Fitness opens at 5:30 a.m. weekdays and closes at 9 p.m. On weekends, the center will be open by appointment.

"I'm looking foward to a long and prosperous run in a great community," Ondish said.
