Shopping Pros Know: Plan before you go

Serious foodies wait for Thanksgiving.

Serious shoppers count down to Black Friday, the day after the holiday, when stores traditionally open early and offer deep discounts.

Experienced shoppers know to plan before they go; this is a day of bargains galore for those who do their homework. To make it a little easier to know before you go, here are highlights of what Springfield’s Route 22 stores will have on sale.

Note that normal return policies don’t always apply on special purchases such as “doorbusters”; if in doubt, check with the store manager. As always, keep the receipts for your purchases.

Sports Authority, 295 US Highway 22, has gifts galore for sports fans and athletes alike. Sports Apparel and Fan Accessories will be 30% off regular prices, while adult sizes of NCAA hoodies are only $12.99. For the indoor athlete, the Gamepower Top Spin Elite Table Tennis Table is priced at $169.99, and the Sportscraft Endeavor 7' Air Hockey Table is priced at $249.99. For the outdoor athlete, consider Men's, Women's, and Kids' Columbia Sportswear and Outerwear, all 25% off.

Staples, 155 US Highway 22, offers good deals on electronics on Friday, which might make this the year to upgrade that digital camers. The Canon PowerShot A1100 12.1 MegaPixel digital camera costs $129.99 A Canon photo printer is free after rebate with the purchase of a digital camera. And that new camera needs a memory card. The SanDisk 8GB Ultra II CF card is on sale for $24.99, along with many others in the SanDisk line.

Sam Ash Music, 155 US Highway 22, has a must-click before you shop. Go here to print store coupons worth as much as $600 towards a purchase of a Paul Reid Smith guitar. Most mic, speaker, guitar and keyboard stands are 15% off with another coupon, while other coupons offer as much as $100 off any purchase in the store over a given amount. 

Guitar Center, at 160 US Highway 22, wants to do good by customers and the needy alike. Customers who bring non-perishable food items to the store to donate will receive 10% off -- up to $500 -- on any single-item purchase. Some restrictions apply. 

Macy’s Furniture, 114 US Highway 22, and Barnes & Noble, at 240 US Highway 22 are keeping their deals under wraps for now. Check back for updates. 

Dunkin Donuts, 130 Route 22, is not only a place to recharge during a busy shopping trip. Stores are also selling Holiday Coffee Coupon Books. Good for 20 cups of coffee, the books cost $20. The decorative coupons make a nice extra on top of a gift or stocking stuffer. 

Just off 22 at 899 Mountain Ave., Walgreens is worth a stop for decorative items, especially. On Friday only, strings of 50 LED decorative lights are three for $10, while pre-lit potted Christmas trees are buy one at $19.99, get one free. And don’t miss the deal on the Snuggie; after the sale and register rewards, the must-have blanket with sleeves costs only $7.99.

Finally, don’t pass by Goodwill, 125 US Highway 22, so fast. The store is a great source for past-season holiday wrapping paper and decorative items, as well as extra plates, cups and silverware for those holiday meals. Friday specials will include the usual discount on the tag color of the day plus a few surprises for shoppers.

As always, pace yourself and enjoy both the products you buy and the process of shopping. Holidays come but once a year; make Black Friday a shoppers’ holiday to remember.
