Springfield Week in Review

A look back at the notable goings on this week.

Fire fighters and emergency responders from Springfield and neighboring towns packed into the town hall meeting room to see Carlo Palumbo promoted to Deputy Chief of the township's fire department. Palumbo, a longtime member of the department, has had a distinguished career as a firefighter in Springfield. As one of the initial wave of responders to 9/11, he was among 10 Springfield fire fighters to . Earlier this month, he was one of three Springfield firefighters to receive the New Jersey State F.M.B.A. EMS Medal of Distinction for his part in an emergency childbirth outside of a bank. The baby girl was born with its umbilical cord wrapped around her neck; , saving the girl’s life.  

Over 20 volunteers braved torrential rains to take part in Springfield Environmental Commission’s on Sunday, April 22. This year, the clean up focused on the wooded areas near Laurel Park and Marion Ave. Many of the volunteers were flood victims of Tropical Storm Irene and knew firsthand the important it is to keep the areas surrounding the waterways clear of garbage and debris.  The two dedicated cleaning groups braved the rain and gathered "mountains of debris" at Laurel Park and at Marion Avenue Park. The "mountains of debris" will be collected and properly disposed of by the DPW. The haul included a set of tires, a ladder, basketballs, a refrigerator and a bicycle. 

The volunteers also found a gang of . Marion Ave. family the Ronans took in the quartet and let them dry off. Springfield families stepped forward, and we are happy to report that all the clean up cats have been adopted.

Governor Chris Christie visited Springfield’s firehouse for a town hall meeting on Thursday, April 26. Dozens of Springfield residents turned up for the event. Christie talked about taxes and, in a passing comment, seemed to tamp down talk that he would be running as Mitt Romney’s Vice President
