UPDATED: Body Found by Springfield Avenue

Union County Police are investigating

Sometime on Friday afternoon, a man walking his dog through a wooded area near Springfield Avenue discovered a body 20 yards from a creek bed. 

The man called Springfield Police, and Union County police also responded to the scene. The area was discovered to be county property and the county police took charge of the investigation.

In a statement, Union County Police described the body as "skeletal remains," and said that due to the body’s state of decomposition they could not determine the person's age, gender or when the death occured.

Union County Police Detective Scott Pentz will conduct the investigation into the death. The Union County Medical Examiner is scheduled to perform an autopsy on Monday, at the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office in Newark.  Law enforcement authorities said a forensic anthropologist will likely assist in determining the identity of the deceased and the cause of death.
