Overturned Tractor Trailer Backs up Traffic for Miles on 78

Accident in Union snarled traffic for miles.

An overturned tractor trailer on I-78 in Union had traffic at a standstill early this afternoon. 

A New Jersey State Trooper said that the tractor trailer, hauling garbage, collided with a pick-up truck. No serious injuries were reported. 

State police said that only one westbound local lane was open shortly after 3:30 p.m. Westbound express lanes were open but slow due to congestion.

Emergency responders and road crews from Union township and nearby towns, as well as vehicles from the department of transportation, were working to clear the road.

New Jersey State police advised drivers to avoid Interstate 78 westbound local lanes near the accident and have advised travelers to use alternate routes or mass transit
