Electronic Sign Approved for Springfield's Town Hall

The sign, estimated to cost $15,000, will be donated by the Springfield Patriot Chamber of Commerce.

Springfield's Town Hall will soon have its own electronic sign board courtesy of the Springfield Patriot Chamber of Commerce.

The Township Committee approved accepting the donation at its July 23 meeting despite the objection of two committee members who believed it was hypocritical to go ahead with it after not allowing local businesses such as CVS and Walgreens to have similar signs.

Committee members in favor of the sign said there is a distinction between the two, as this will serve the public by providing information and could be particularly useful in times of emergencies. Members agreed it is important that the sign's message not change too frequently so it is not distracting to drivers.

When the sign will be installed has not been determined. Scott Seidel, co-chairman of the Springfield Patriot Chamber of Commerce, said it has not been ordered yet as the Township only accepted the donation from the Chamber last week.

"We are reviewing prices from a few vendors at this time," Seidel said. "The cost will be around $15,000 and it is being donated by the Springfield Patriot Chamber of Commerce."

Seidel added that the new sign should be approximately the same size as the existing one.
