Springfield Dems: Committee Takes Actions on Flood Remediation

The 2013 Township Committee got right to work this past week taking up the matter of flood mitigation in Springfield. Flooding during Hurricane Irene and previous storms have left Springfield residents with major damage to their homes and belongings. In an effort to reduce the damage caused by future storms, Committeewoman Margaret Bandrowski introduced a resolution to create the Springfield Flood Mitigation Committee. The resolution was seconded by David Barnett. This important committee, made up of resident volunteers, will work at a local, county and state level to bring best practices in development and land use to Springfield. The resolution passed 4-0 by the sitting Democrats (Mr Shehady was not present for the meeting).

Additionally, Committeeman David Barnett introduced a resolution instructing the Springfield Environmental Commission, including the newly formed Flood Mitigation Committee, to work with the Planning Board to draft flood mitigation language for inclusion in our land use ordinances. The resolution passed 4-0 by the sitting Democrats (Mr Shehady was not present for the vote).

“Protecting our residents’ safety, homes and property is of extreme importance. The flood mitigation effort we kicked off this week starts the ball rolling and will hopefully, make a difference in the years to come.” stated Mayor David Amlen.
