Police and Fire Get New/Old Names

Divisions have been replaced by departments.

Springfield now has brand new police and fire departments.

Sort of.

At the Springfield Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 22, the governing body voted to change the names of the two public safety organizations, changing their official titles from the fire and police divisions to the fire and police departments.

When the Committee created the Department of Public Safety, the fire and police departments were renamed the fire and police divisions in accordance with the new command structure. Structurally, both were divisions under the umbrella organization of the Department of Public Safety.

Other than having Public Safety Director Richard Rosell overseeing the two departments, the name did not change anything about the actual departments.

This week, noting that the name change could entail changes to police and fire signs, patches and more, the Committee voted to revert to the old names.

Shortly after the vote passed, Township committee member Marc Krauss welcomed Captain Cook, Officer in Charge of Springfield police, to the Police Department.
