Springfield Government Honors Red Cross

Officials note the organizations recent service to the Township and tell personal stories.

Springfield's township committee honored the Colonial Crossroads Chapter of the Red Cross for their service to the town by naming March Red Cross month.Christy Hodde, executive director of the Summit-based chapter, accepted the award on the organization's behalf.

The Red Cross recently played a critical part in aiding the residents of the Morris Ave. apartment temporarily displaced by a fire in that building last month. While public safety officials determined whether the apartments were safe, the Red Cross  paid for their hotel rooms and meal vouchers.

While presenting the proclamation, Springfield Mayor Ziad Shehady shared his personal story of Red Cross assistance. While he was deployed overseas as an infantryman, he was informed of his grandparent's passing through the Red Cross' emergency message program.
