Students Honored for Poster Contest Entries

Winners' art turned into magnet designs.

Earlier this spring, the Springfield Environmental Commission held their annual Clean Communities’ Day Poster Contest.  The contest, open to any child who lives or attends school in Springfield, had entrants create posters illustrating this year’s theme, “Springfield Recycles.”

With help from a grant acquired through Springfield’s Department of Public Works, some of the winning designs will be printed as Car Magnets that will be given to children in Springfield schools.

There were 585 entries from 4 elementary schools: James Caldwell, Thelma Sandmeier, St. James and Edward V. Walton. Of the 585 designs there are 11 finalists in 4 categories for the Magnets:  5th grade - Madaline Catullo, Sophie Pleva, Adam Wuest; 3rd & 4th grade - Olivia Gleason, Sadie Lowy, Taylor Lucarello; 1st & 2nd grade - Amanda Balboni, Jacob Cordeiro, Isabel Grussgott, Colin Snyder; and Pre-K & Kindergarten - Ayana Alles.

Those deserving Honorable Mention are: 5th grade - Bryce Forys, Horace Giambattista; 3rd & 4th grade - Catriana Corbett, Mikaela Criscuola, Kevin Duffy, Gabrielle Harrington, Danielle Mc Bratney, Thomas Perez, Christina Tillinghast, Isabella Vitello, Janna Wohl; 1st 7 2nd grade - Karen Menezes, Gina Petruzziello, Helenna Vieira; and Pre-K & Kindergarten - Mahalia Gorham, Ethan hill, Emma Pallitta, Megan Zuzarth.

Special Mention went to Ron Brody for poetry and to Arianna Cetrulo who design is being used by the Springfield Garden Club for their Annual Plant Sale.

The finalists and Honorable and Special Mention were recognized at the Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, May 3.

“The SEC thanks all who participated and volunteered to make this event possible,” Springfield Environmental Commission chair Denise DeVone said in an email.
