Township Committee Votes Yes on Pay Freezes

After several last minute corrections, non-union Township employees have their salaries frozen at previous year's rates.

At their meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 23, Springfield's Township Committee voted to freeze the salaries of a number of township employees. The resolution, passed in anticipation of a tight budget for 2010, was introduced at the Committee's Dec. 8 meeting.

The resolution was re-written between the two meetings to accurately record payment rates. When the resolution was initially drafted, it was based on out of date salaries.

The resolution does not affect union workers, but township officials have indicated they would speak with unions in efforts to make up for a lack of state aid anticipated for next year's budget.

Pay freezes have also been suggested on the county level. Earlier this month, incoming Union County Freeholder Chairman Dan Sullivan and outgoing Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella recommended freezing salaries for employees making more than $90,000 in the county's budget.
