New Art Teacher for Walton

Incoming art teacher Gwen Howard worked with retired Donna Mertz-Burkhardt before the winter break

Gwen Howard, the new art teacher for the Edward V. Walton early childhood center, introduced herself in a letter to students and parents sent out on the school system's listserve this week.

Westfield resident Howard, who is currently working towards her Masters in Art Education at Kean University, is a successful artist who has sold and exhibited her works for a decade. She has worked with children in private and public schools.

She replaces the outgoing art teacher Donna Mertz-Burkhardt, who retired at the end of the last school term after spending 26 years teaching art. Howard worked with Mertz-Burkhardt before the holiday break to introduce herself to the children and to ensure a smooth transition between instructors.
