Bulldogs Down Bears In Dual Track Meet

Cioffi, Santos Maye Each Take Event

The sun wasn’t the only thing shining over David Brearley’s track, as the Bulldogs of Jonathan Dayton shone just as much.

Anthony Cioffi blew away the competition in the 100 meters and Ina Santas did the same with the 400 meter hurdles as the Dayton Bulldogs took care of the Brearley Bears in their dual track meet Tuesday at the Kenilworth high school.

Santos grabbed the early lead in the 400s and never looked back, extending her lead at the end and finished with a time of 77 seconds. Though she ran with great grace and perfect execution on the hurdles, she had some nerves before the heat.

“I thought that their 400 hurdlers were going to be really good and got me kind of nervous,” Santos said. “But I didn’t really think of the other hurdlers while I was running. I was trying to keep up with my pace and holding up energy for the last hundred."

Senior Savonn Maye also did well for Dayton, winning the 100 meter hurdles with an excellent performance, and fellow senior and All-American Alexa Williams, headed to Maryland for track, had a solid day will in the long, triple and high jumps.

Cioffi and teammate Aaron Williams both ran the 100, and took first and third respectively. Cioffi ran the 100 meters in a time of 11 seconds flat, easily winning the heat, but came off the track a little upset with the score.

“The time I was shooting for was a 10.7 or at least a 10.6," Cioffi said. "Those times are going to be key for the Meet of Champions which kids are running 10.5. I am still disappointed in myself for that time because I know I can do better and I just have to work on little things to run consistent 10.8 and 10.7's."

While teaming up in both football and basketball for Dayton, leading those teams to their most successful seasons as of late, the track is a little more of an individual sport, but both love the friendly competition.

“Aaron is a good runner and he pushes me a lot. Its good racing with him because I know there is a guy that has that speed to win,” said Cioffi, who also took part in the high jump, but finished the meet early with a popped blister on his foot. “It is fun, we push each other so yea, I enjoy running with him."

As the team prepares for the rest of the season and post season meets, including the Meet of Champions, one thing is for sure: The Bulldogs have the talent and potential to make some noise in track and field.
