Dayton Varsity Tennis Wrap-up: Weeks 1 and 2

A look back at the last two weeks of Dayton Tennis.

"At least one year has gone up on the Boys Tennis banner for the last four years," Jordan Gelband said. "Four first place finishes in sections and three first place finishes in states. The streak will not end, this year is no exception."

Those are powerful words from the former Dayton Tennis Captain. Tennis is officially underway. So far the Dayton Bulldogs are 2-2, and things are shaping up to be a great season.

The season started off on April 1 with a win against Arthur Johnson 5-0. Dan Karlin (first Singles), Matt Neubauer (second Singles), and David Pilmenstein (third Singles) played singles with the closest match ending 6-2. Jason Condon and Brandon Helfand (first Doubles) played first doubles and shut out Arthur Johnson in the first set and only allowed them two games in the second.

Week two didn't begin as well. Dayton only won two of the five matches against Governor Livingston. Dan Karlin (first singles) and Matt Neubauer (second singles), as usual, played great matches and only allowed their opponents to win five games combined. By far the best match to watch was Zac Corey and Brandon Helfand's (third doubles) match. They played three 6-game sets. In total, they played 32 regulation games and a tiebreaker. It was the closest of the matches with a loss by 2 points in a tiebreaker after a 6-4 win in the first set.

The second of three matches in the week was against Summit High School. Matt Neubauer (second singles) played two tough sets, but came out victorious. Overall, most of the matches ended with close scores. In the end, Dayton lost by one match. Summit proved to be a worthy opponent, and the re-match on April 30, 2010 at the Dayton Courts will be a match to watch.

The third match of the week was a turn around for Dayton. Between the second singles, third singles, first doubles, and second doubles, Union Catholic only won three games out of 51 games. Matt Neubauer (first singles) played an amazing match. His opponent, Matt Zalewski, would not give up, even though in the 24 games they played he was never ahead. Matt continues to be a player to watch this season.
