Springfielder Hosts Fundraiser for Cousin With Cystic Fibrosis

Evan Berkowitz will sell frozen treats and bracelets Sunday at The Ice Hut, where owners, Pam and Matthew Klein, have agreed to donate ices for the event.

Evan Berkowitz, who attends Florence M. Gaudineer Middle School, is raising money to help fight the disease that affects his cousin Tova Shapiro.

At a year old, Shapiro, 19, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, a condition that affects the lungs and digestive system of approximately 70,000 worldwide, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

In her honor, Berkowitz will host a fundraiser from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at The Ice Hut to benefit Concerned Friends of Cystic Fibrosis. This organization, established by Berkowitz’s uncle, helps to improve the health and lives of children with cystic fibrosis and their families.

"Evan has a big heart and is very caring and has a very close relationship with his cousin," said Berkowitz's mom, Rhea.

The 12 year old will also be selling 'Beat CF one breath at a time' bracelets and The Ice Hut has agreed to donate ices for the charity event.

The Mountain Avenue frozen treat shop, committed to giving back to the community, recently hosted 'Autism Sings: A Night of Song' and for the past two years has donated all the supplies needed for Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a national foundation that raises money and awareness for childhood cancers by hosting local sales, organized and run by parents and students of Walton School.

Unable to stop by The Ice Hut on Sunday? Donations can be made by visiting Concerned Friends of Cystic Fibrosis.
